National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors

NACWPI 2022 National Conference

September 22-24, 2022

Westin Long Beach Hotel

Long Beach, California

The National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors' 2022 National Conference will be held September 22-24, 2022, at the Westin Long Beach Hotel in Long Beach, California, in conjunction with the 2022 National Conferences of the College Music Society (CMS), the Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI), and the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda (PKL).

Air Travel

Although the smallest of the three options, Long Beach Airport (LGB) is the closest airport to the conference hotel (just 6 miles away) and provides commercial service to 18 nonstop destinations. LGB is served by American, Delta, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, and Southwest Airlines.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is approximately 22 miles from the Westin and offers the greatest number of daily flight options.

Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) is located approximately 23 miles southeast from Long Beach and connects nonstop to 42 destinations via Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country, United, and WestJet.

Note: Due to construction at LAX, taxis and rideshare vehicles do not pick up at the Central Terminal area. Instead, riders must take a free shuttle to a designated area called LAX-it (pronounced LA Exit) to meet their taxi or rideshare. Shuttles to LAX-it are available outside baggage claim on Level One. Click here for additional information. Excepted from this are private vehicles, Uber XL, Uber Black, Uber Black XL, Lyft XL, and Lyft Lux, which are permitted to drop off and pick up in the Central Terminal Area.

Ground Transportation

The hotel does not provide shuttle service. Conference attendees must organize their own transportation from their selected airport to the conference hotel.

Rideshare Services
Rideshare services, including Uber and Lyft are available at LAX, SNA, and LGB for drop-offs and pickups.

Taxi
Taxi fares from LAX to the conference hotel should cost $80–$100, fares from SNA to the Westin should cost around $75 and the trip from LGB to the Westin should be between $30 and $35.

Tram
If you are travelling from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach, you might consider the 51-minute tram ride to Long Beach. The Metro A Line (Blue) train departs the 7th Street / Metro Center Station approximately every 20 minutes, and costs only $1.75 each way. The penultimate stop is the 1st Street Station, just 1 block from the Westin.

Driving
If you will be driving, visit the hotel’s website for turn-by-turn driving directions from the 3 major airports listed.

Registration Fee Discount
As an incentive to stay in the conference hotel, a 50% discount on the conference registration fee is available to members of NACWPI who (1) reserve using the conference guest room reservation link below for a minimum 2-night stay, (2) provide their confirmation number at the time of registration, and (3) subsequently honor their reservation.

Rate
For single or double occupancy in a room with a single King or two double beds, the conference room rate is $189/night plus applicable state and local taxes. An extra charge of $25 per person, per night will apply for triple or quadruple occupancy.

If you are sharing a room with another person, be sure that your name is added to the reservation. Be aware that if your name does not appear on the room reservation, you are not officially considered a guest of the hotel.

The discounted rate is available 3 days prior and 3 days after the conference dates, subject to availability.

Roommate Finder
If you are interested in locating a roommate for the conference, consider utilizing the conference Roommate Finder.

Reservation Deadline
The deadline to reserve rooms at the conference rate is Thursday, August 11, 2022. Rooms within the reserved conference block will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. NACWPI cannot guarantee rooms at the conference rate once the room block has been sold; thus, participants are encouraged to reserve well in advance of the final cutoff.

What Happens if the Hotel Sells out of Rooms Prior to the Reservation Deadline?
If this happens, Conference organizers will try to negotiate with the hotel to add more rooms to its block. When this is not possible, conference organizers will explore the possibility of reserving an additional block of rooms at another hotel. Additional rooms are not guaranteed, however, and ultimately it is each attendee’s responsibility to make room reservations in a timely manner.

How to Reserve
A credit card is required at the time of reservation to hold a room but will not be charged at the time of reservation. You may make your reservation online by clicking here.

Hotel Room Cancellation Fee
CMS strongly encourages attendees who book a guest room at the conference hotel, but who subsequently no longer need it (e.g., one finds a roommate or makes alternate lodging arrangements), to cancel their original hotel reservation as soon as such a decision is made. When one holds a room past the hotel reservation deadline, this prevents other attendees from booking the room. To discourage this practice, attendees who cancel their guest room reservation(s) at the conference hotel within 30 days of the start of the conference (on or after August 22, 2022), will be assessed a $219.61 cancellation surcharge (the equivalent of one night's stay plus applicable tax) by CMS, not NACWPI, and will be obligated to pay it in order to pick up registration materials. When two or more persons are associated with a reservation, the cancellation fee will be divided equally amongst them, and each will be responsible for their portion. In the event an attendee for whom this policy applies withdraws participation in the event, they will be billed for the fee.

Hotel Early Departure Fee
The Westin advises that an early departure fee of one night’s room and tax will apply if a guest checks out prior to the confirmed checkout date on their reservation unless for a medical or family emergency. Documentation may be required by hotel management in order for the fee to be waived.
